Level 2 Technical Specialist in MOT Testing (Classes 4 & 7) 

The IMI Level 2 Technical Specialist in MOT Testing (Classes 4 & 7) is designed for experienced automotive technicians who wish to qualify as DVSA-approved MOT Testers. This industry-recognised qualification provides the knowledge and understanding required to carry out statutory MOT inspections safely, accurately and in accordance with current DVSA testing standards.

The course combines legislative requirements with practical application, helping delegates develop the competence needed to inspect vehicles, identify defects, apply the MOT Inspection Manual correctly, and understand the responsibilities of an authorised MOT Tester. Successful completion of this qualification is a key step towards becoming a nominated tester within an authorised MOT Test Centre.

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for this qualification, candidates must:

• Hold a full UK driving licence for the relevant vehicle classes.
• Have at least four years’ full-time employed experience in vehicle servicing and repair.
• Have no unspent convictions relating to the MOT scheme, the motor trade, or violent offences.
• Be considered to be of good repute.
• Hold an appropriate Level 3 qualification or recognised equivalent accepted by DVSA for the vehicle classes they wish to test.

Qualification and Authorisation

Successful completion of the IMI qualification enables candidates to progress to the final stage of becoming an authorised MOT Tester. Learners must successfully complete a DVSA-observed demonstration test to obtain a Certificate of Competence (CoC) before they can be approved as a nominated MOT Tester.

Once authorised, MOT Testers must also complete MOT Annual Training & Assessment each year to maintain their testing status and remain up to date with changes to DVSA testing standards, legislation and inspection procedures.

Level 3 Technical Specialist in MOT Test Centre Management

The IMI Level 3 Technical Specialist in MOT Test Centre Management is designed for individuals responsible for managing an MOT Vehicle Test Station (VTS) or overseeing MOT operations within a business. Ideal for current or aspiring Authorised Examiner Designated Managers (AEDMs), workshop managers, service managers and business owners, this qualification develops the knowledge required to ensure MOT testing is carried out in accordance with DVSA legislation and best practice.

The course provides a comprehensive understanding of the legal, operational and quality management responsibilities associated with running a compliant MOT Test Centre. Delegates will gain the confidence to effectively manage MOT testing processes, maintain high standards of quality assurance and ensure their business continues to meet the requirements of the DVSA.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification. However, it is ideally suited to individuals who currently manage, or intend to manage, an MOT Test Centre or who are responsible for the administration and quality control of MOT testing activities.
